Fun with Food WEEK TWELVE

Last week we created hors d' oeuvres and appetizers. These are little bites that you have before a meal... and I was stressing the importance of bite-sized cuts, colors, textures, flavors and of course, appearance. The kids were given square whole wheat bread, a square whole grain crackers and circular whole grain crackers, but they needed to present three shapes of appetizers at the end of the class. Triangular (cut from the bread), Circular and Square.

They had all sorts of veggies and cheeses to create with and some made little sandwiches, some made food sculptures and some made cheese and cracker bits.

Regardless of where I teach, what birthday party crowd I am "entertaining" and whether they are 5 year olds or 12 year olds, the resounding theme is they love that I give them the freedom to create what they want and eat what they want as they go. It's easy to do this when all the ingredients are nutritious!!! It's a total WIN-WIN situation.
